History and Tradition of the Hospital:
The Odry Town Hospital history is very long. The hospital was established as an "endowment hospital". In the founding of the hospital, Countess Fürstenberk participated, who lived in the castle at the near village of Spálov. The original hospital was founded to treat the poor living along the Odra riverside, however, a new hospital was built later in the present place as the Odry population had increased. After building the hospital, Countess Fürstenberk also founded an endowment amounting to 200 000 golden coins in a Swiss bank. The endowment was looked after by the Archbishop of Olomouc. The founding of the hospital dates back to 1865; the hospital was general and, as it was needed then, internal and surgical diseases were healed there. In addition, there was a maternity department in the hospital. Nurses and low-level medical personnel consisted of cloistresses of the Order of the Holy Cross. After the World War Two has ended, the hospital came under the Regional Institute of National Health and an infection department was there for a long time. The medical care was terminated in the hospital for the reason of the hospital rebuilding which took 5 years and was completed in 1968. The cost of the rebuilding amounted to about CZK 6,000,000. The hospital was intended to be used to finish the treatment of internal diseased patients from the Internal Medicine Department of the District Hospital in Nový Jičín. The hospital reopening took place in a hurry as the Soviet troops made effort to occupy the hospital and use it for military purposes. The hospital was still in an incompleted condition then so its rebuilding was opened and being in-operation completed with the assistance of the management of the town of Odry, the Optimit company management and the medical staff (MD Urbánek and MD Svoboda, among others). The hospital's first Head Physician was MD Alfons Novák, while MD Milan Petržela, later Head Physician and Director, became the Deputy Head Physician. The hospital was incorporated into the District Institute of National Health in Nový Jičín. The next milestone in the hospital came about in 1992 when the District Institute of National Health in Nový Jičín split into several medical entities and, consequently, the Hospital with Health Centres in Odry, managed by separate staff, was, among others, founded. Later, the hospital was assigned the Town of Odry as a new establisher. That fact resulted in the founding of the Odry Town Hospital. First, the hospital was a combined facility which consisted of an internal medicine department and a mental home department. On October 1, 2001 the hospital was transformed to the present form which consists of two separate legal entities: the Odry Town Hospital and the Odry Town Hospital - Mental Home. Both the entities have a joint management. The Odry Town Hospital provides an internal medical care for a 25,000-population catchment area. The hospital bed capacity is 38 beds, including 4 beds in the Intensive Care Unit. Due to its conception and equipment, the hospital complies with requirements for a type II (district) facility. The Odry Town Hospital - Mental Home's catchment area includes the whole of the district. The Mental Home's bed capacity is 75 beds, of which the last 15, which had been established due to a loft conversion, were put into operation on February 10, 2003. The fact that the Odry Town Hospital had succeeded to become independent has proven to be advantageous for the hospital as it was able to execute its visions of the bed conception and the entire polyclinic part so, to date, it has built an ambulatory system of professions to supplement the hospital services provided both for the internal medicine part and the mental home. Since 1992, the hospital equipment has been modernised at cost exceeding CZK 100,000,000. In the whole of the hospital, a computer system has been introduced and the Internet access has been provided.
